Why You Can’t Let Anyone Do Something For You ~ Men And Receiving Love
Saturday, seven in the morning. Your mate pulls up in the driveway with the trailer already hitched. You didn’t ask him.
By nine, the dead lounge, the busted fridge and half the shed are at the tip, and he’s wiping his hands on his jeans like it was nothing. Something in your chest has been running a tally all morning: a slab, fuel money, a day of your own. Before he’s even shut the gate, you’ve pressed a fifty into his hand.
He looks at it and hands it back. “Mate. Let me.”
So why did “let me” feel harder to hear than “thank you”?
You Do It Everywhere
Someone shouts you lunch and you’re ordering the coffees before the plates are cleared. Your partner brings you a cuppa at the end of a long day and you’re already cooking dinner before it’s cool. Someone says “I’ve got this” and your hand is on your wallet.
Most of us learned early that love is something you earn and keep up. Carry your weight, pay your way, never owe anyone. That’s a fine rule for money. It’s a terrible rule for love.
The Fifty Was Never Paying A Debt
The fifty in your mate’s hand wasn’t settling anything. It was handing back the one thing you can’t stand to hold: being given to with nothing asked in return.
In my work I call it the Spirit Essence, the calling deep in every man to become unconditional love. And unconditional means no invoice. You can’t earn it. You can’t repay it. You can only receive it.
Giving feels like strength, so we’ve had a lifetime of practice. Receiving feels like owing, so we’ve avoided it. But a man who can only give has only practised half of love. Doing is paying back. Being is letting it land.
What It Costs When You Always Pay Back
Here’s the quiet cost. People stop offering. The mate with the trailer thinks, “Don’t bother, he’ll only press cash on me.” The people closest to you find that nothing they give can arrive without turning into a swap. And love that’s always swapped never gets to simply arrive.
Your kids are watching too. They learn that a man pays his own way, every single time. So ask yourself: if nobody could ever repay you, would you still let them love you?
Wanting To Even The Score Isn’t A Flaw
It’s decency, learned from men who never wanted to owe anybody. But the tally was never really about money. It was a man making sure he’d never have to need anyone.
Your Practice This Week
Let one thing stay unpaid. A lift, a coffee, a favour. Say, “Thanks.” Nothing else. Then leave the ledger open and notice the itch to settle. Don’t scratch it for seven days. Just feel it.
It will be uncomfortable. You’ll probably feel a bit strange within yourself. That’s the practice. And the purpose in it is becoming a man who can receive love the way he gives it, freely, with no invoice.
Come into your body. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. What’s the hardest thing for you to let someone do for you? Notice it. Feel it. Allow it. Receive it.
Tell me in the comments on the video: what’s the one thing you’d find hardest to let someone do for you?
